About Carpenter Ant
Carpenter ants are large ants, usually black or reddish-black. They are known for excavating wood to build their nests, which can cause significant structural damage to homes if left untreated.
Behavior & Habits
Unlike termites, carpenter ants do not eat wood; they only tunnel through it. They prefer moist or decaying wood but can also nest in dry, sound wood. They forage for food, including insects and sweets, often at night.
Risks & Concerns
The primary risk is structural damage. Over time, a large colony can weaken the wooden framework of a house. They can also bite if threatened, though they do not possess a stinger.
Prevention Tips
- Eliminate sources of moisture and standing water.
- Replace any rotting or water-damaged wood.
- Keep firewood stored away from the home's foundation.
- Trim tree branches that touch the roof or siding.
